What is Mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that develops in the mesothelium, a protective membrane that surrounds many internal organs. In advanced stages, mesothelioma can affect spread from its point of origin and affect the surrounding mesothelium as well as the lymph nodes.

There are three main types of mesothelioma: pleural mesothelioma, which affects the lining of the lungs; peritoneal mesothelioma, which affects the lining of the abdominal cavity; and pericardial mesothelioma, which affects the lining of the heart.

Causes of Mesothelioma

In approximately 80% of cases, mesothelioma develops as a result of prolonged exposure to asbestos. As a result of inhaling or ingesting asbestos fibers, the fibers become trapped in the mesothelium, causing damage to the mesothelium and creating conditions that can contribute to the growth of cancerous cells.

Friends or family members of individuals whose jobs entailed working in or around environments containing asbestos may also be at risk for developing mesothelioma.
