Radiation therapy involves the use of a high-dose of radiation to eradicate or reduce the growth of malignant Mesothelioma tumors. Radiation is an emission of high-energy x-rays, neutrons, photons, or additional radiation resources. This can be delivered by way of internal or external-beam radiation therapy.
External beam radiation therapy sends radiation through a machine outside the body directly to the cancerous source. This is the preferred type mesothelioma. It is administered in a similar way as the type of x-ray used to find a broken bone, although the duration of the treatment is longer. External radiation treatments are usually given daily (5 days a week) for 3 to 5 weeks.
Internal Radiation uses radiation that is positioned extremely close to or inside the malignant tumor. The source of radiation is generally sealed in a small container called an implant, which is then planted directly into the body to target the tumor.
Internal Radiation Implant Forms:
When using radiation therapy or radiotherapy, the goal is primarily to damage the dangerous cancer cells so they are unable to divide and multiply. As a result the mesothelioma tumor size is significantly reduced.
In order to provide the greatest probability of successful mesothelioma treatment, doctors will commonly use radiation in combination with surgery or chemotherapy. This multi-procedural approach is the most hopeful for the survival of mesothelioma victims.
